(In)Stability of Test Scores

Both school and district administrators use the results of standardized, large-scale tests to inform decisions about need for, or success of, educational programs interventions. However, test at level are subject random fluctuations due changes in cohort, items, other factors outside school’s control. This study examined year on standardized delivered Ontario, Canada. G-theory analyses found that scores not stable enough for meaningful conclusions be made based results. For small medium sized schools, years data collected before defensible can trends scores. The authors introduce a ‘bounce’ statistic provides simple, easy interpret measure score stability.
